Contest, Award & Scholarship Search
The Contests, Awards & Scholarships section is a searchable database that includes talent searches, academic contests, scholarships and other awards that are appropriate for gifted students. Resources have been included in this database for their emphasis on academic excellence and achievement, excellence in the arts, and/or a proven track record in assisting gifted students in maximizing their potential. Search options include the type of resource, name of resource, sponsoring organization, age/grade level, and/or subject matter.

Distance Learning Search
The Distance Learning section is a searchable database that includes online and/or correspondence courses, as well as home schooling materials. The offerings range from courses in single subject areas to virtual schools that provide entire curricula. Resources have been included in this database for their flexibility, academic rigor, or reputation within the gifted community. You may search for these resources via a number of options including, but not limited to, the sponsoring organization, age/grade level, method of delivery, and/or subject matter.

Program Search
The Programs section is a searchable database that contains numerous enrichment programs. These resources vary in terms of whom they serve, when they are offered, the length of the programs and how much they cost. Resources have been included in this database for their academic rigor, reputation in the gifted community, and/or capacity to serve highly able young people. You may search for these resources via a number of options including, but not limited to, program name, sponsoring organization, age/grade level, program location(s), and/or timeframe.

The Schools section is a searchable database that contains a number of schools that have experience serving gifted students. Schools that have been included in this database have either been designed specifically for the purpose of meeting the needs of gifted students or have implemented services to support the needs of gifted students. You may search for schools in this database using the “Preference Search” or the “Profile Search”.

Testing & Counseling Search (Please note: This section is currently under construction.)
The Testing & Counseling section is a searchable database that contains professionals who provide these services and have experience working with gifted students. This database serves as a directory of individuals who can provide insight into the minds of highly able young people. Professionals who have been included in this database have expressed an understanding of the gifted population and have experience in working with gifted young people. You may search this database via a number of options including, but not limited to, name of professional or organization, type of academic and/or achievement test offered, and/or location.

In addition to the searchable databases described above, this section of the Gifted Resource Center contains useful information intended to expand your awareness of issues in the gifted community. This section also provides you with links to the websites of other organizations that may also be helpful when advocating for a gifted student.

Although this section is in development, it will ultimately offer:

• Useful facts and demographics regarding the characteristics and needs of gifted young people.
• Bibliographies - For teachers, parents, students, gifted professionals and policymakers
• Gifted and Talented Organizations - National, Regional, Local
• Conferences - For educators and professionals, parents and researchers

Keyword Search
Much like a Google™ or Yahoo® search, this feature allows you to search for resources in the database using specific keywords.

If you receive an extensive list of resources and would like to narrow it down, you may click the “Back” button on your Internet browser and select more options on the search page. If you receive no resources or a very short list, you may click the “Back” button on your Internet browser and unselect options that are not critical to your search. Please feel free to experiment with the search by selecting different options to get a feel for how the database works.

To illustrate how the search process works, consider the examples below:

• If you are interested in viewing a list of Summer programs, follow these steps:
  1) Go to the Programs section of the Gifted Resource Center.
  2) In the "Program Search" page that follows, select the option for "Summer" by clicking inside the corresponding check box for item six.
  3) Click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page to process your request.
  4) On the "Program Search Results" page that follows, you will see a review of the criteria you specified at the top of the page. Just below the "Search Criteria" are the "Search Results" that lists programs meeting the criteria you specified. In this case it would be list of Summer programs.

• If you are interested in viewing a list of Summer programs for students in grades 4 - 6, follow these steps:
  1) Follow steps one and two in the example above.
  2) You will also need to select grades four, five and six by clicking inside the corresponding check box for item three.
  3) Click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page to process your request.
  4) On the "Program Search Results" page that follows, you will see a review of the criteria you specified at the top of the page. Just below the "Search Criteria" are the "Search Results" that lists programs meeting the criteria you specified. In this case it would be a list of Summer programs that service either fourth, fifth or sixth grade students.

• If you are interested in viewing a list of Summer programs for students in grades 4 - 6 that focus on Mathematics or Science, follow these steps:
  1) Follow steps one and two in the example above.
  2) You will also need to select Mathematics and Science in the scrolling text box in item eight. Use the arrow on the right to scroll through the list of options. Select Mathematics by clicking one time. Mathematics will then be highlighted. Select Science by simultaneously pressing the Ctrl key and clicking on Science one time. Mathematics and Science will then both be highlighted.
  3) Click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page to process your request.
  4) On the "Program Search Results" page that follows, you will see a review of the criteria you specified at the top of the page. Just below the "Search Criteria" are the "Search Results" that lists programs meeting the criteria you specified. In this case it would be a list of Summer programs that service either fourth, fifth or sixth grade students focusing on Mathematics or Science.

In summary, selecting more than one response to a question will generate a list of all the available resources containing one OR the other of the selections, but not necessarily both. For example, selecting grades four, five and six within item for "Age/Grade Level" will generate a list of resources that serve grades four, five OR six but not programs that only serve all grades four, five, AND six.

Selecting responses to different questions will generate a list of resources containing all of those selections. For example, selecting grade three from item three and Science from item eight will generate a list containing resources for third grade students AND Science.

Selecting More Than One Response to a Question
Scrolling Text Boxes - A scrolling text box is a box containing multiple options alphabetically listed in a vertical manner. You can view all of the options in the box by clicking the arrows on the right to scroll up and down within the box. To select an option within a box, simply click on that option one time. That option will then become highlighted. If you would like to select more than one of the options available within the scrolling text box, select one by clicking on the option. To select another option within that box, simultaneously hold down the Ctrl key (for Windows) and select all of the options that you are interested in. Each item you select will become highlighted. (If you are using a Macintosh computer, hold down the Command key instead of the Ctrl key).

Check Boxes - A check box is a small square located just to the right of an option. To select an option, click one time inside the check box(es) corresponding to the option you are interested in. A check will appear inside the box(es) corresponding to the option(s) that you’ve selected. You can unselect any of the options by clicking one time inside of the corresponding box. The check will then disappear.
